Wrap up Open Teaching Week with this 8-minute video course tour!

Course Tour Summary

SPE 100, The HeART of Public Speaking is a fully online, asynchronous course, which is set up in Blackboard and the OpenLab. The course includes several elements to help students be successful:

  • A welcome video that walks students through the course design
  • A how-to video with instructions for using Blackboard and the OpenLab
  • A course guide that helps students plan by mapping out the weekly readings, lecture videos, assignments, and quizzes for the semester
  • Sample work from previous students for every assignment
  • Content is provided in multiple formats to engage students with different learning styles or preferences

The course textbook, The Public Speaking Project, is an online open educational resource (OER). This textbook can be accessed via a link on Blackboard and is also documented in the syllabus, course guide and via Open Lab.

The course uses the discussion board to build community. In order to encourage dialog, students are asked to respond to each other’s posts. There are several ungraded, causal discussion boards where students can connect to share contact information, resources, and videos to cultivate community.

Feel free to review the Open Lab course site to see the set up in action. Questions about the course can be posted under “Leave a Reply” below.
