Description
This two-part workshop provides a framework on how to become an anti-racist educator and provides space for participants to consider how to infuse anti-racist pedagogy into their curriculum and classroom practices. We’ll consider what it means to be an anti-racist educator and engage in small group discussions, self-reflection, and journaling. We’ll highlight and build on the ways that we already implement anti-racist practices in our pedagogy, and develop an action plan on the next steps on becoming an anti-racist educator.

On March 8th from 1-2:30 p.m., Mishka, Yama, Angela and Shawn will present the introduction to anti-racist pedagogy.  During this session, the presenters will do an overview of what it is to be an anti-racist educator through self reflection journaling, explanation of racist/anti-racist definitions and practices, and break out room sessions with discussion prompts that lead to dialogue on how race and racism affects one’s teaching.  We will provide participants with a framework on how to become an anti-racist educator.  Participants will be given homework for the next session and anti-racist resources.

On April 5th from 1-2:30 p.m., Mishka, Yama, Angela, Shawn and Kirsten will present a continuation of the previous presentation where they further the conversation about anti-racist pedagogy to focus on the dilemmas of race and racism in the classroom.  In this session, we discuss how to infuse anti-racist pedagogy into one’s curriculum and classroom practices by incorporating restorative circles, trauma sensitive practices, how to talk about race in the classroom, reliving and sharing racist scenarios that may occur in the classroom and how to handle them, incorporating anti-racism in different disciplines, etc.  All participants will leave with an action plan on the next steps on becoming an anti-racist educator.

We have a desire to put a spotlight on anti-racist pedagogy and practices at BMCC.
