Description
As professors, we generally enjoy “knowing” but our assumed position regarding knowledge can become a kind of defense. What are some strategies for facing not only our own not-knowing, but our students as well, and how can we meet this “unknowing” with compassion and grace? In this Inquirer Talk, Manya will address such questions as: How can we be more welcoming of the uninvited guests—the typo, the error that speaks, of the students’ mis-understanding that is nevertheless, often an understanding? How can we be more inviting even of the gaps in our students’ knowledge so that they don’t feel shame at our exasperation that risks closing them down even further?
This session is part of the Inquirer Talks series highlighting the work of faculty who have published pieces in BMCC’s Inquirer. Read related Inquirer piece “Revelation of Ignorance: Finding Satisfaction in Unsatisfaction”
The Inquirer is a journal devoted to teaching, learning, and scholarship at BMCC. We aim to be a medium for the exchange of teaching ideas and support, as well as a resource where faculty can develop ideas to move their research forward. The Inquirer’s faculty editors welcome submissions on faculty development and pedagogy relevant to teaching at the community college and BMCC specifically. Submissions are accepted until mid-February of each year. See our call for proposals webpage for additional information about the process and the range of potential topics.
