Are you interested in an approach to teaching and learning that promotes engaged learning through active student participation? Would you like to know of an approach that amplifies teaching and extends your classroom with real, community-based opportunities to apply skills, confirm or challenge theory? Service Learning encourages educators to build experience into a wide variety of academic subjects. It brings new immediacy to undergraduate education and forges important links between us, our students, and the communities in which we live.

In this Brown Bag discussion, guest panelists will share specific ways of Service Learning that they have used and have been using in their classes. We look forward to a rich discussion of how we can incorporate service learning in our classes.

This session is part of a faculty-led “brown bag” series on pedagogy that takes place once a month in CETLS, and was organized by the CETLS Advisory Board Teaching and Learning group:

  • Monica Foust (Social Sciences, Human Services, and Criminal Justice)
  • Catherine Mbewe (Nursing)
  • Jennifer Delfino (Academic Literacy and Linguistics)
  • Miguel Fiolhais (Sciences)
  • Eliza Osae-Kwapong (E-Learning)

Each meeting will focus on a specific topic related to teaching and learning. We will discuss effective teaching strategies as well as challenges in a non-formal environment. Please bring your own lunch!
