Description
The Supplemental Instruction program at BMCC has consistently shown significant improvements in three key areas:

  • Increased retention rates in historically challenging courses.
  • Improved grades for students in historically difficult courses.
  • Higher graduation rates.

In this Inquirer Talk, Oksana Sivkovich Fagin will share her personal experiences and perspectives on using the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program and ways she used her SI to significantly increase the numbers of students able to finish and pass her classes. She will provide participants with practical information and an opportunity to brainstorm ideas and strategies for using an SI in your classroom.

This session is part of the Inquirer Talks series highlighting the work of faculty who have published pieces in BMCC’s Inquirer. Read related Inquirer piece “Finding the Human Touch: The Impact of Supplemental Instruction (SI) in the Various Educational Modalities.”

The Inquirer is a journal devoted to teaching, learning, and scholarship at BMCC. We aim to be a medium for the exchange of teaching ideas and support, as well as a resource where faculty can develop ideas to move their research forward. The Inquirer’s faculty editors welcome submissions on faculty development and pedagogy relevant to teaching at the community college and BMCC specifically. Submissions are accepted until mid-February of each year. See our call for proposals webpage for additional information about the process and the range of potential topics.
