A Space for Grace: June Open Education Seminars and Projects

The BMCC Library and CETLS are pleased to offer three paid open education opportunities this June:

  • Open Educational Resources (OER)/Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) Course Redesign ($1000 stipend)

Redesign one of your courses with no-cost materials to save students the cost of commercial textbooks (more information and application). We welcome departmental cohorts to participate (invite your friends/colleagues!). This seminar and the course redesign is grounded in pedagogical conversations with colleagues.

  • Open Pedagogy Assignment Design ($500 stipend)

Design an assignment that creates space for your students as knowledge creators (more information and application). Departmental cohorts are encouraged to participate (invite your friends/colleagues!). Focus is on pedagogical conversations facilitated by faculty mentors, with experience in audio/podcasting, public writing, Wikipedia editing, zines, and more.

  • Propose an open education project (stipend and other funding TBD)

We invite faculty to propose open education projects for the upcoming summer (can be implemented in next academic year) (more information and application). Projects may include OER creation, student open pedagogy projects, OER adoption with targeted faculty cohorts, and more. Let your imagination run wild!

The seminars above center around pedagogical conversations with colleagues and address the stress and challenges we and are students are experiencing in this difficult and heart-breaking time. Over 300 of your BMCC colleagues have already joined the open education movement, incorporating open education practices in their courses. We—and our students—invite you to join them.

Applications for the two seminars (which take less than 5 minutes to complete) are due by 5pm on Friday, May 3, 2024. Open Education project proposals will be accepted through May 31. The BMCC open education initiative is funded by the NYS Education Department through the CUNY Office of Library Services.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions by emailing oer@bmcc.cuny.edu. We look forward to learning with you!

And finally, we offer you a poem: Martín Espada reading Imagine the Angels of Bread (and the text).
