Description
Our four colleagues organized a trip for 30 BMCC students to Washington, DC in Spring 2024, and were able to do the same with a similar group to Boston in Spring 2025 for the Eastern Sociological Society’s (ESS) annual meeting. It is a huge undertaking that takes planning, grant money, scheduling, transportation, dietary considerations, emergency planning. In this Inquirer Talk, Shenique, Satenik, Brenda and Michelle will talk about their experience, both the satisfying aspects of watching our students grow, and the frustrations and pitfalls of planning such a major endeavor.

This session is part of the Inquirer Talks series highlighting the work of faculty who have published pieces in BMCC’s Inquirer. Read related Inquirer piece “Building Academic Communities and Careers: Advancing Criminal Justice Education through Conference Engagement.”

The Inquirer is a journal devoted to teaching, learning, and scholarship at BMCC. We aim to be a medium for the exchange of teaching ideas and support, as well as a resource where faculty can develop ideas to move their research forward. The Inquirer’s faculty editors welcome submissions on faculty development and pedagogy relevant to teaching at the community college and BMCC specifically. Submissions are accepted until mid-February of each year. See our call for proposals webpage for additional information about the process and the range of potential topics.
