Description
Our students continue to grapple with significant mental health challenges, compounded by academic pressures, financial instability, and the lingering effects of the pandemic. As faculty, we play a critical role in fostering a supportive learning environment and advocating for the resources students need to thrive.
This Inquirer Talk, based on several articles written by professors Sharie Hansen and Michael McGee since the pandemic, will explore the mental health landscape for our students, with a focus on disparities in care, the long-term effects of COVID-19, and actionable strategies for faculty. We’ll have a conversation about how to:
- Implement trauma-informed teaching
- Offer mental health support
- Create an inclusive classroom culture that prioritizes student well-being.
Share your experience and insight as we work toward a more resilient and equitable future for BMCC students.
This session is part of the Inquirer Talks series highlighting the work of faculty who have published pieces in BMCC’s Inquirer. Read related Inquirer pieces “Strategies for Promoting Mental Well-Being among College Students in the Post-COVID-19 Classroom” (Inquirer #31) and “Manifestations of Social Anxiety in College Students Post-Pandemic” (Inquirer #30).
The Inquirer is a journal devoted to teaching, learning, and scholarship at BMCC. We aim to be a medium for the exchange of teaching ideas and support, as well as a resource where faculty can develop ideas to move their research forward. The Inquirer’s faculty editors welcome submissions on faculty development and pedagogy relevant to teaching at the community college and BMCC specifically. Submissions are accepted until mid-February of each year. See our call for proposals webpage for additional information about the process and the range of potential topics.
