Description
The Committee on Race, Equity and Inclusion, the BMCC Library and CETLS are co-sponsoring a bell hooks Book Club for the Spring 2022 semester. To honor Dr. hooks’ legacy and to further our work on culturally relevant, anti-racist, and trauma-informed pedagogy, the participants will read Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom.
This first discussion will cover chapters 1-3 and will be guided by jean amaral (Library) and Hollis Glaser (Speech, Communications and Theatre Arts).
Future sessions are as follows:
- Session 2: Tuesday, March 29 at 1pm, Chapters 4-6
- Chapter 4, “Essentialism and Experience” guided by Agustin McCarthy
- Looking for volunteers for remaining chapters
- Session 3: Tuesday, April 12 at 11am, Chapters 7-9
- Chapter 7, “Holding my Sister’s Hand” guided by Victoria Apostol-Marius
- Looking for volunteers for remaining chapters
- Session 4: Thursday, May 5 at 3pm, Chapters 10-14
- Chapter 10, “Building a Teaching Community” guided by Robin G. Isserles
