Do our students see themselves as successful in our classroom? Do they give up quickly? Do they get discouraged when they struggle and often think they cannot get past it? How can we change those questions in our students’ mindset? In this Brown Bag session, we will discuss the necessity of fostering a growth mindset. We will discuss how we can instill in our students a desire to struggle and help cultivate academic grit. We will look at academic mindset from multiple perspectives and present strategies that can be implemented in the classroom. Professor Ewa Barnes (Academic Literacy and Linguistics) and Professor Elisabeth Jaffe (Mathematics) will lead the discussion sharing her experiences on the topic, and Professor Monica Foust (Social Sciences, Human Services & Criminal Justice) will moderate.

This session is part of a faculty-led “brown bag” series on pedagogy that takes place once a month in CETLS, and was organized by the CETLS Advisory Board Teaching and Learning group:

  • Evelin Gamarra-Martinez (Modern Languages)
  • Monica Foust (Social Sciences, Human Services, and Criminal Justice)
  • Catherine Mbewe (Nursing)
  • Jennifer Delfino (Academic Literacy and Linguistics)
  • Miguel Fiolhais (Sciences)
  • Eliza Osae-Kwapong (E-Learning)

Each meeting will focus on a specific topic related to teaching and learning. We will discuss effective teaching strategies as well as challenges in a non-formal environment. Please bring your own lunch!
